Over recent weeks you may have noticed some strange and even fishy displays appearing in shop windows across Lisburn City Centre. But don’t worry our retailers haven’t all become river sports outlets! This window display competition was part of the Mayors Parade with the theme being Lagan Life celebrating the importance of the River Lagan to Lisburn, its people, its cultural diversity, its history and its vision for the future.

The Mayor Councillor Allan Ewart, Chairman of Lisburn City Centre Management, Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chairman of Lisburn City Council’s Economic Development Committee and City Centre Manager Patricia Elliott had the difficult job of judging the shop window competition taking into account who had used their creative imagination, resources and materials in reference to the theme –Lagan Life.

Councillor Ewart commented, “We saw some fantastic and creative entries from a range of stores across the city centre with all sorts on display from bikes, canoes, sporting gear wetsuits and frogspawn to artwork and furniture by local artists.

It is with pleasure we can announce that after a lot of deliberating Smyth Patterson Ltd were awarded the winner of the competition for their fantastic display featuring a series of artwork depicting the Lagan and life in Lagan Valley.  It was great to see so many local businesses taking part and adding to the colour of the City over the Mayors Parade weekend.’’

Councillor Jenny Palmer added, ‘‘As you can imagine it was very difficult to choose a winner but very encouraging to see the effort that was made by the retailers taking part.  This is just one of a number of Council supported events and initiatives that will be delivered in the City Centre in partnership with Lisburn City Centre Management as everyone works towards making Lisburn a vibrant and competitive location for all its’ visitors.”

Patricia Elliott added, ‘We would like to thank Birthdays, Cafe Latte, Jeanette Kidd, Body Shop, McCalls Menswear and Smyth Patterson for participating in this year’s shop window display.  A special acknowledgement must go to the two runners up in the competition, The Body Shop in Bow Street and McCall’s Menswear in Market Street. I look forward to working with the private sector in the future to increase involvement in civic and City Centre events.’
