Smoking Hot BMX Show in Lisburn City Centre

Last Saturday Market Square was transformed with a spectacular BMX show by Belfast Urban Sports with jumps, twists, somersaults and stunts to impress the many spectators.

The show was part of a number of events making up Lisburn Bike Week sponsored by John M Hanna Cycles and organised by Lisburn Road Safety Committee and Lisburn City Centre Management including a visit by Hugo Duncan’s Roadshow and a beginner’s cycle along the tow path.

The Mayor Cllr Allan Ewart, Chairman Lisburn City Centre Management commented, ‘the BMX show has been very successful in entertaining city centre shoppers and visitors as well as promoting awareness of Bike Week. I watched nervously as the guys amazed us with their somersaults and stunts. On Friday 25th June I hope to see a great number of people who work in the City pedalling their way into the City Centre for Bike to Work Day and picking up their free breakfast.’

Cllr David Archer, Chairman of Lisburn Council’s Leisure Services Committee who’s Community Festivals Fund has helped fund the activities added, ‘It’s great to be able to support events and festivals such as Bike Week which bring the community together in our shared spaces within the City Centre.’

Upcoming events include The Family Cycle Day this Saturday 19th June; A beginners Cycle 7pm 24th June and Bike to Work Day on 25th June. During the Family Cycle Day visitors can take part in an hour long family cycle along the tow path departing from Castle Gardens at 11am, with a longer 2 hour 16 mile trip around Lisburn leaving earlier at 10am for more adventurous families, both guided by Tri Cycle. Both Cycle rides finish in Castle Gardens, Lisburn where the Midsummer’s Fayre will be in full swing running from 10am to 4pm complete with historic villagers, birds of prey, face painters, food stalls and 17th and 19th century characters explaining the history of Castle Gardens and giving you the chance to try on historical clothing.

Karen Mawhinney, Vice Chair Lisburn Road Safety Committee commented, ‘It’s been great to work with Lisburn City Centre Management organising the Bike Week Festival to encourage people onto their bikes. Cycling is a healthy, environmentally friendly, money saving and practical alternative to taking the car, particularly for shorter journeys. It is also sociable providing the perfect excuse to share some time with friends or family. Come along to one of the cycle rides next week and we will ease you back into the saddle!’
