ArrowHistoric Quarter Festival draws the crowds

Lisburn’s City Centre had an extra buzz about it on Saturday as the crowds turned out to take part in the Historic Quarter Festival. The highlights were the WWII displays, to remember the 70th anniversary of the start of WW II. by War Years Remembered in Market Square and the WWII re-enactment by Living History in Bow Street.

The Mayor Cllr Ewart speaking after the event said ‘The festival was a great success with so many people coming into the city to take a look at the WWII displays. There were a lot of people, young and old trying on various uniforms and finding out about life during the war. This type of event is a big hit with people of all ages with older people seeing items that they may have had or used in the past and the younger generation who get to have a ‘hands-on’ experience of life 60-70 years ago during the war. War Years Remembered and the Wartime Living History Association put on a great display and I’d like to thank them and the Historic Quarter Arts Group for arranging the event.’

David McCallion from War Years Remembered who owns the travelling WWII display said ‘It’s always great to be invited to do a display in Lisburn as they are always well supported. Saturday was no exception with people of all ages really interested in finding out about life during WWI and WWII. Many people were sharing stories of relatives who fought or lived through the war and for me this is the best way to remember them. I look forward to working with Lisburn City Centre Management to hopefully come back to Lisburn again’

Cllr Jenny Palmer, Chair of the Council’s Economic Development Committee adds ‘ It’s great to see events such as this taking place in Lisburn Historic Quarter.  This activity adds to the vibrancy and vitality of the area  which in turn attracts  visitors into the city and helps boost footfall and turnover for local businesses. I was delighted to see so many of the businesses in and around Market Square participating in the festival by promoting special deals and offers which encouraged people into the City.’

The festival also tied in with the European Heritage Open days with the free displays well attended. These included a Richard Wallace Exhibition in Castle House by Anthea Turner from the Richard Wallace Trust, a historic display in Railway Street Orange Hall hosted by John Palmer and various tours and a 400th anniversary of Lisburn display in the Irish Linen Centre.

The event was funded by Lisburn City Council Community Festival Fund and managed and delivered by Lisburn City Centre Management and the Historic Quarter Arts Group.
